Fashion Trend Forecasting S/S 24: Solarpunk
About the Project
This project focuses on forecasting future trends in the fashion industry through an in-depth analysis of macro and micro trends. Using the DESTEP framework, the current landscape was explored by integrating various trend theories such as the trend ecosystem, trickle-down theory, cultural brailing, and diffusion of innovation theory.
DESTEP Analysis
Through DESTEP analysis, two primary macro trends emerged: technological advancement and sustainability. At the micro level, Green Technology were identified as critical elements shaping the future of fashion.
The analysis also identified Polycrisis as a macro trend—an overarching term capturing the complex and interconnected global challenges, such as the cost of living crisis, climate change, and geopolitical conflicts.
Amidst these overwhelming global issues, Solarpunk emerged as a key trend. Solarpunk serves as a visual manifesto of optimism, symbolizing a collective desire for a future where technology and nature coexist harmoniously. This trend provides a hopeful narrative, addressing the complexities of sustainability and technological innovation within the fashion industry.

Design Direction
The design direction for Solarpunk reflects a fusion of futuristic and natural elements:
Colours: A balance of futuristic pastels with lush greens and earthy tones symbolizes the aspiration for a harmonious coexistence between technological progress and nature.
Silhouettes: Streamlined, asymmetric, draped, and sheer designs define the Solarpunk aesthetic, embracing both structure and fluidity.
Design Details: Deconstructed and experimental textures like crochet knit and patchwork represent a soft rebellion against conventional fashion norms. Asymmetry, such as uneven hems, adds a touch of appreciation for the raw beauty of nature.
Fabrics & Materials: The use of regenerative and bio-fabricated materials, along with naturally dyed fabrics, is central to the Solarpunk trend. Patchwork techniques utilizing deadstock and surplus fabrics promote sustainability. Recommended materials include FSC-certified Tencel, lyocell, viscose, GRS recycled nylon, and bio-based polyamide for a glossy finish.
Relevance: This design direction is well-suited for summer occasions, festival wear, casual separates, dresses, tops, and blouses.

Confirming the Solarpunk trend, the Spring/Summer 2024 runways showcased a growing popularity of the sheer trend. Skirts and dresses took center stage, featuring intimate-inspired items like bodysuits and camisole-style clothing. Skin-baring dresses in various fabrics, including crochet, lace, and netting cover-ups, made prominent statements in the collections.
Minimalist pieces and subdued styling were also prevalent, elevated through textured fabric materials. Designers creatively incorporated techniques such as fabric manipulation, draping, ruching, and fabric knots to add interest. Asymmetry, especially in one-shoulder designs and uneven hems, remained a dominant trend.
Accessories played a key role, with statement jewellery and belts deemed essential. The ongoing trend of metal and sculptural shapes continued, along with 3D floral corsages influencing footwear and accessories, adorning delicate shoes and jewellery.

The Solarpunk trend emerges as a key response to the interconnected global crises, collectively referred to as the Polycrisis, which includes the cost of living crisis, climate change, and social upheavals. As consumers increasingly demand sustainable and innovative solutions, Solarpunk offers a hopeful vision where technology and nature coexist harmoniously, resonating with the cultural zeitgeist of eco-consciousness and futuristic optimism.
Implications for Brands
For fashion brands, embracing the Solarpunk trend means adopting design directions that incorporate sustainability, technology, and individuality. The focus should be on:
Sustainable Materials: Integrating regenerative and bio-fabricated fabrics like mycelium, naturally dyed textiles, and recycled materials can meet the growing demand for eco-friendly fashion.
